Brief History of the Church of San Barnaba

Ubicata nell'angolo tra via Chiassi e via Poma. La storia della Chiesa è legata all'insediamento dell'ordine dei "Serviti". La prima Chiesa fu edificata intorno al 1263, con la costruzione successiva del convento, fu affidata ai Servi di Maria da Francesco I Gonzaga nel 1397. Fu ricostruita con successive modifiche tra il 1716 e 1760. In quegli anni , nel corso dei lavori, venne profanata e dispersa la tomba di Giulio Romano, qui sepolto dal 1546. Tracce della costruzione precedente sono il campanile gotico (incompiuto) e parte del chiostro del convento (che soppresso nel 1797 , fu successivamente adibito ad ospedale e infine, in parte adibito ad abitazione per i sacerdoti e in parte demolito nei primi anni del '900 per lasciare spazio le carceri). Nell'interno si possono ammirare dipinti di: Lorenzo Costa il Giovane (fine '500), Gerolamo Bonsignori, Giuseppe Bazzani, Benedetto Pagni, Alessandro Maganza.
